Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of cognitive fusion and cognitive defusion in the relationship between rejection sensitivity and anorexia nervosa in young girls. The design of this descriptive/correlational study was a path analysis type. the statistical population of the study included all female students of the University of Tabriz in 2024, of whom 307 were selected by convenience sampling. The data collection tools included the Eating Disorders Diagnostic Scale (EDDS) (Stice et al., 2000), Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire (RSQ) (Downey & Feldman, 1996), and Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire (CFQ) (Gillanders et al., 2014). To analyze the data, the Path analysis method was used. The findings showed that the final research model was a good fit. The results showed that there was a positive and significant relationship between rejection sensitivity and anorexia nervosa (p<0.01), also a positive and significant relationship was found between cognitive fusion and anorexia nervosa (p<0.01), but there was no significant relationship between cognitive defusion and anorexia nervosa (p>0.01). The indirect effect of sensitivity to rejection through cognitive fusion on anorexia nervosa was positive and significant (p<0.01). However, cognitive defusion did not mediate the relationship between sensitivity to rejection and anorexia nervosa (p>0.01). Mental health professionals, with reliance on this model, can use therapeutic interventions based on cognitive fusion and cognitive defusion in anorexia nervosa.
