Abstract: (61 Views)
This study aimed to determine the mediating role of self-compassion in the relationship between parental stress and psychological distress in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder. The present study was a descriptive-correlational study using structural equation modeling. The statistical population of the study included all parents of children with autism aged 3 to 18 years who had been referred to treatment centers (occupational therapy, rehabilitation, and psychotherapy) in Tehran in 2024. 220 people were selected from 5 treatment centers through convenience sampling and responded to the Self-Compassion Scale Short Form (SCS-SF; Raes et al., 2011), the Parenting Stress Index- Short Form (PSI-SF; Abidin, 1990), and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21; Loviband & Loviband, 1995). Data analysis was performed using structural equation modeling. The results showed that the proposed model had a good fit. The results showed that parental stress had a positive direct effect on psychological distress; parental stress also had a negative direct and significant effect on self-compassion (P<0.05). The results of the bootstrap test indicated that self-compassion played a positive and significant mediating role between parental stress and psychological distress (P < 0.05). Overall, the results indicate that parental stress had a direct and mediated effect on psychological distress in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder.
