The present study aimed to investigate the causal explanation of marital adjustment based on avoidant attachment: the mediating role of intimate partner violence among women in Karaj city. This descriptive-correlational research employed a structural equation modeling approach. The statistical population included all married women referring to medical centers in Karaj in 2022, from whom 450 individuals were selected through available sampling. Participants completed the dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS) by Spanier et al. (1975), the Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) questionnaire by Straus et al. (1996), and the adult attachment inventory (AAI) by Hazan and Shaver (1987). Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results indicated that the research model had a good fit, and avoidant attachment had a direct, negative, and significant effect on marital adjustment (P< 0.01). Furthermore, avoidant attachment, through the mediation of intimate partner violence, had an indirect, negative, and significant effect on marital adjustment (P<0.05). These findings suggest that avoidant attachment and intimate partner violence significantly influence marital adjustment; therefore, awareness of these variables by psychologists, counselors, couple therapists, and other relevant professionals can be beneficial for improving marital adjustment.
