Abstract:   (125 Views)
The purpose of the present study was to compare the Group‑Based Compassion‑Focused Intervention Package for self-harming behaviors with Dialectical Behavior Therapy on mental pain of adolescents with self-harming behaviors. The research method was quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest and control group, with two-month follow-up period. The statistical population consisted of adolescents aged 12–18 years, who were referred to counseling centers of Ministry of Education in Isfahan that had at least one recorded incident of self-harm in second half of 1403. Total of 45 adolescents were selected using purposive sampling method and randomly assigned to 3 groups of 15 participants each. The first group received the researcher-made intervention for coping with self-harming behaviors based on compassion in 10 sessions, and the second group received Dialectical Behavior Therapy in 12 sessions. To collect data, Self-Injurious Behavior Inventory (Sanson et al., 1988; SHI) and Mental Pain Scale(Orbach et al, 2003; OMMP) were used. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA. Results showed a significant difference between pretest mental pain scores and posttest and follow‑up scores (P < 0.05). Results also indicated no significant difference between two treatments over time (P>0.05), suggesting similar effectiveness. Accordingly, given that the researcher‑developed compassion‑based coping package for self‑injurious behaviors produced results comparable to dialectical behavior therapy with fewer sessions, it may be recommended as a more efficient and cost‑effective option for reducing mental pain in adolescents with self‑injurious behaviors.
