Abstract

The aim of this study was to phenomenologically investigate the role of music on the psychological dimensions of youth.  The research method was qualitative and phenomenological.  The study population was students in the age range of 18 to 35 years studying at Allameh Tabatabai University during the year 1300-1400.  Sampling was purposefully selected from the community.  The research tool was a semi-structured interview in which the effect of popular music on the psychological and emotional dimensions of individuals was examined.  Sampling was continued until saturation;  After 13 interviews, the obtained data were analyzed.  A total of 39 sub-themes were extracted which were finally classified into 13 main themes.  Findings indicate that the effects of different types of music on young people are divided into three domains: cognitive, emotional, and behavioral.  The emotional domain includes: creating a sense of calm, creating energy and happiness, creating social interest, emotional paradox, frustration, and contagious sadness;  Behavioral domains include empowerment, emotional exhaustion, communication with others, the portrayal of individual identity, and music addiction in young people.
