Abstract

The present study was conducted to investigate the mediating role of ego strength in dissociative and depersonalized states of people with traumatic experiences. The research method was the descriptive-correlation type of path analysis. The statistical population in this research was made up of all people aged 15 to 35 who had traumatic experiences in Qom province in 1402, and the research sample included 250 of these people considering the inclusion criteria. Therefore, by sending a link to the selected people, the questionnaires were completed online. Measurement tools, depersonalization questionnaires (DES, Sierra and Berios, 2000), dissociative experiences (DES-II, Carlson and Putnam, 1993), childhood trauma (CTQ, Bernstein et al., 2003), and ego strength. (ESS, Baron, 1953). Data analysis was done using Pearson correlation and path analysis. The results of the fit of the proposed model indicated a good fit of the model with the data. Based on the findings, childhood trauma has a positive and significant effect on dissociative states and depersonalization and a significant negative effect on ego strength (P<0.01). Also, ego strength has a negative and significant effect on dissociative and depersonalized states (P<0.01). Also, the indirect effect of childhood trauma on dissociative and depersonalized states was significant by entering the variable of ego strength into the model (P<0.01). Therefore, the strength of the ego can affect the post-traumatic experience and cause psychological balance and the absence of dissociative and depersonalization disorders when fighting against internal and external stimuli.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the mediating role of attachment and ego strength in the relationship between childhood trauma, dissociative states, and depersonalization. The research method was descriptive-correlation and structural equations type.  The statistical population in this research was made up of all people aged 15 to 35 who had traumatic experiences in the city of Qom, in 2023, and the sample included 250 of these people who were selected by available sampling. The measurement tools included Cambridge Depersonalization Scale (CDS, Sierra & Berrios, 2000), dissociative experiences (DES-II, Carlson & Putnam, 1993), childhood trauma (CTQ, Bernstein et al, 2003), ego strength (ESS, Barron, 1953), and Adult Attachment Interview (AAI, Hazen and Shaver, 1987). Data analysis was conducted using Pearson correlation statistical tests and structural equations. The results of the fit of the proposed model indicated a good fit of the model with the data. The direct coefficients of the model showed that childhood trauma had a positive and significant effect on depersonalization (P< 0.001) and dissociative state (P‌‌<0.05) and a significant negative effect on ego strength (P< 0.001) and secure attachment (P< 0.001). Also, the results showed that childhood trauma has an indirect effect through the mediation of secure attachment on dissociative states and depersonalization (P<0.001) and through the mediation of ego strength (P<0.05). Therefore, the strength of ego and secure attachment can affect the post-traumatic experience and cause dissociative disorders when dealing with stimuli.

Abstract

This review has aimed to collect all the studies conducted on embodiment in patients with Depersonalization – De realization Disorder (DDD) since 2010. The present research is being done as a comprehensive scoping review. Searches are made in various databases including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. By searching keywords including embodiment, interoceptive signals, Depersonalization – De realization disorder, and review study, the number of potentially related articles was more than 700 titles. the criteria for selecting papers was approaching DDD with any embodied approach. After different levels of censorship using various checklists such as “Review Articles & Systematic Reviews” and “Checklist for Preparing and Evaluating Review Article”. However, only 10 of them were selected as significant enough to meet the inclusion criteria of the present study fully and determined for a detailed view and textual examination. It has been found that scientists have mostly concentrated on the idea of improper “interoceptive signals” as the main bodily mechanism underlying DDD. It has been found that some elements like preventing one from making proper reactions in situations that demand it, and also intentionally avoiding empathy with others, create incompatibility between a person’s conception of her presence in the situation and the signals she receives from inside.
