The purpose of this study was to determine the mediating role of negative affect in the relationship between fear of missing out and smartphone addiction in adolescents. This was a descriptive-correlational research study using the structural equation modeling method. The statistical population of this research was the students of the second year of secondary school in Lahijan city in 2023. 230 people participated in the study in an accessible manner using an online survey form. To collect data from the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS; Thompson, 2007), the Fear of Missing out Scale (FoMoS; Wegmanen et al., 2017), and the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV; Kwon et al., 2013) were used. The results showed that the model had a good fit. The results showed that the direct effect of fear of missing out on smartphone addiction and negative affect was significant; Also, the direct effect of negative emotion on smartphone addiction was significant (P<0.05). The results of the bootstrap test showed that negative affect plays a mediating role between fear of missing out and smartphone addiction (P<0.05). The results of this study showed that negative affect is an underlying mechanism in the relationship between fear of missing out and smartphone addiction.
