Abstract:   (15 Views)
One potential risk factor for autism spectrum disorder that has recently attracted the attention of researchers is excessive use of electronic screens by children. The present study is part of a mixed-method, multi-case study that aimed to identify the challenges experienced by families with children with autism spectrum disorder during the implementation of an electronic fasting program. Participants included four mothers of children with autism who fully implemented the three-week electronic fasting program. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings identified six main categories of challenges: intra-family inconsistency, difficulty in managing time and consistently caring for the child, lack of alternative sources for the child's entertainment, non-acceptance of the child by peers and society, psychological exhaustion of the mother, and protesting reactions of the child to the restriction of electronic screens. These challenges were more severe in families with fewer support resources and a limited role of fathers. The findings indicate that the successful implementation of this intervention requires prior education of parents, psychological support for mothers, design of alternative programs, and increased social acceptance of families with children with autism.
