Abstract: (203 Views)
The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy on the severity of depressive symptoms and traumatic event in individuals with childhood trauma. The present study was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design and a control group with a one-month follow-up period. The statistical population of this study was individuals with childhood trauma referring to counseling and psychological service centers in Guilan province in 2025. 32 individuals were selected through purposive sampling and were randomly assigned to two experimental (n=16) and control (n=16) groups. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ; Bernstein et al., 2003), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II; Beck et al., 1996), and the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R; Weiss, 2007) were used to collect data. Individuals in the experimental group underwent individual intervention in eight sessions. Data analysis was performed using repeated measures analysis of variance. The findings showed that compared to the control group, the scores of the experimental group in the variables of depressive symptoms and traumatic event decreased significantly from pre-test to post-test and follow-up (P<0.05); the findings also showed that there was no significant difference between the post-test and follow-up scores in the experimental group (P<0.05). Overall, it can be concluded that EMDR therapy was significantly effective in reducing depressive symptoms and traumatic event in individuals with childhood trauma.
