The present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of coping strategies in the relationship between locus of control and suicidal tendency in prisoners. This was a descriptive-correlational study using path analysis. The statistical population of the present study included male prisoners of Ghezel Hesar prison in Karaj in 2023. A total of 229 male prisoners were selected as samples using purposive sampling. The Levenson Locus of Control Scale (LLOC; Levenson & Miller, 1972), the Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation (BSSI; Beck & Steer, 1993), and the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WCQ; Lazarus & Folkman, 1988) were used to collect data. Data analysis was performed using path analysis. The findings showed that the proposed model had a good fit. The direct coefficients showed that internal locus of control was negatively related to suicidal tendencies and emotion-focused coping strategies; on the other hand, it had a positive and significant relationship with problem-focused strategies (p<0.05). On the other hand, the findings showed that external locus of control and chance were significantly positively related to suicidal tendencies and emotion-focused coping strategies and negatively related to problem-focused strategies (p<0.05). The results of the indirect effects using the bootstrap method indicated that coping strategies significantly mediated the relationship between the dimensions of locus of control and suicidal tendencies (p<0.05). Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that locus of control is related to suicidal tendencies through its connection with coping strategies.
