The aim of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of short-term intensive dynamic psychotherapy on emotional suppression and defense mechanisms of individuals with emotional alexithymia. The research method was a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test-post-test design and a control group with a two-month follow-up period. The statistical population included clients of counseling and psychology centers in the first and third regions of Tehran in 2025, from which 40 people were selected using the purposive sampling method and randomly assigned to two groups (20 people in each group). The research instruments included the Defense Styles Questionnaire (DSQ) by Andrews et al. (1993), the Toronto Emotional Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) by Bagby et al. (1994), and the Weinberger Emotional Suppression Questionnaire (WAI) by Weinberger (1971). short-term intensive dynamic psychotherapy were conducted in the form of 15 90-minute sessions. For data analysis, repeated measures analysis of variance and Bonferroni post hoc test were used. The results showed that compared to the control group, there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test in all three components of emotional suppression and underdeveloped and neurotic defense mechanisms of the experimental group at the 0.5 level, and there was also no significant difference between the pre-test and post-test of the control group (P<0.05), and the results were maintained in the follow-up phase. According to the results, short-term intensive dynamic psychotherapy is an appropriate intervention for improving emotional suppression and defense mechanisms in people with alexithymia syndrome.
