Abstract:   (181 Views)
The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of group-based short-term psychodynamic therapy on depression symptoms, distress tolerance, and quality of life in patients with breast cancer. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control-group design with a two-month follow-up was employed. The study population comprised women with breast cancer who attended the Tehran Cancer Patients Support Association in 2024. Thirty participants were selected through convenience sampling and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups, with 15 participants in each group. The research instruments included the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II; Beck et al., 1996), Distress Tolerance Scale (DTS; Simons & Gaher, 2005), and World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF; WHOQOL Group, 1996). The experimental group received 12 weekly 90-minute sessions of group-based short-term psychodynamic therapy. Data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance. The findings indicated significant differences between the experimental and control groups from pretest to posttest in depression symptoms, distress tolerance, and quality of life (P<0.05). No significant differences were observed between posttest and follow-up scores in the experimental group, indicating that the treatment effects were maintained at the two-month follow-up (P>0.05). Overall, the findings suggest that group-based short-term psychodynamic therapy may effectively reduce depression symptoms and improve distress tolerance and quality of life in patients with breast cancer.
