Abstract: (34 Views)
The present study was conducted with the aim of identifying adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies in self-injuring adolescents. The present qualitative study was of a phenomenological type. The participants of this study included self-injuring adolescents in Tehran in 2024 who had referred to counseling and psychological services centers. To conduct a phenomenological study, 20 adolescents were purposefully selected based on the criterion of theoretical saturation and participated in this research. Data collection was conducted using a semi-structured interview. The interviews were summarized and categorized into three categories: sub-themes, main themes, and core themes using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). The findings showed that the frequency of self-injurious behaviors involving self-cutting was higher in girls than in boys; In contrast, smoking, drug and alcohol abuse were more common in boys. The results of the interview analysis were classified into two core themes: adaptive coping strategies and maladaptive coping strategies; the first core theme (adaptive coping strategies) included 9 main themes and 36 sub-themes; and the second core theme (maladaptive coping strategies) included 6 main themes and 19 sub-themes. From the overall findings, it can be concluded that coping strategies in self-injuring adolescents include a set of adaptive and maladaptive strategies, that appropriate psychological interventions should be provided for them.
