Abstract: (40 Views)
The present study aimed to examine a structural model illustrating the mediating role of fear of missing out (FoMO) in the relationship between loneliness and Internet gaming disorder (IGD). The research method was descriptive-correlational, using structural equation modeling. The statistical population comprised students of Koushyar Institute of Higher Education in Rasht, Iran, during 2025, from whom 225 individuals were selected through convenience sampling. The study employed the Internet Gaming Disorder Scale–Short Form (IGDS9-SF; Pontes & Griffiths, 2015), the UCLA Loneliness Scale–Version 3 (UCLA-LS3; Russell, 1996), and the Fear of Missing Out Scale (FoMOS; Wegmann et al., 2017). The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results indicated that the model had a good fit. The findings showed that both loneliness and fear of missing out were directly and positively related to Internet gaming disorder (P<0.05); loneliness was also directly and significantly related to fear of missing out (P<0.05). The results of the bootstrap test also confirmed the mediating role of fear of missing out in the relationship between loneliness and Internet gaming disorder (P<0.05). From the above findings, it can be concluded that loneliness is directly related to Internet gaming disorder among students and is mediated by fear of missing out.
