This study aimed to determine the mediating role of basic psychological needs in the relationship between helicopter parenting and emotional well-being in students. The present descriptive-correlational study was conducted using structural equation modeling. The statistical population included second-year high school students in Urmia in the 2024-2025 academic year. Using an online survey, 200 people participated in this study using the convenience sampling method and answered the questionnaires. The Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction Scale (BPNSS; Deci & Ryan, 2000), the Helicopter Parenting Scale (HPS; LeMoyne & Buchanan, 2011), and the Subjective Well-Being Questionnaire (SWBQ; Keyes & Magyar-Moe, 2003) were used to collect data. Data analysis was performed using structural equation modeling. The results of the model fit study indicated that the proposed model had a favorable fit. The findings related to direct relationships showed that helicopter parenting was negatively and basic psychological needs were positively related to emotional well-being (P<0.05); also, helicopter parenting was negatively and significantly related to basic psychological needs (P<0.05). In addition, the results of the bootstrap test showed that basic psychological needs played a mediating role in the relationship between helicopter parenting and emotional well-being (P<0.05). The findings of this study imply that helicopter parenting affects students' emotional well-being both directly and through basic psychological needs.
