Abstract: (490 Views)
The present study aimed to predict parenting stress in mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder based on psychological hardiness and coping strategies. The research method was descriptive-correlational using regression analysis. The statistical population consisted of mothers of 8- to 12-year-old children with autism spectrum disorder in Tehran during the fall of 2025. A sample of 112 mothers was selected using convenience sampling. The instruments used in this study included the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF; Abidin, 1995), the Psychological Hardiness Questionnaire (PHQ; Kobasa et al., 1982), and the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS; Endler & Parker, 1990). Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation and multiple regression tests. The findings indicated that avoidant and emotion-oriented coping strategies were positively correlated with parenting stress (p<0.01), whereas problem-oriented coping strategy and psychological hardiness showed a negative correlation with parenting stress (p<0.01). Furthermore, hardiness and coping strategies together explained approximately 32% of the variance in parenting stress (p<0.01). The results indicate that psychological hardiness and coping strategies significantly predict parenting stress in mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Specifically, psychological hardiness and problem-focused coping were associated with decreased parenting stress, whereas avoidant and emotion-focused coping strategies were associated with increased stress. These findings underscore the critical role of cognitive-emotional factors in the development of parenting stress.
