Abstract: (15 Views)
The present study aimed to elucidate the serial mediating role of smartphone overuse and withdrawal symptoms in the relationship between alexithymia and academic burnout. This research employed a descriptive-correlational design using structural equation modeling. The population consisted of engineering students at universities in Tehran and Alborz in 2025, from which 309 students were selected through convenience sampling. The instruments included the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS, Bagby et al., 1994), the Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS, Kwon et al., 2013), and Bresó’s Academic Burnout Questionnaire (BABQ, Bresó et al., 2007). Data analysis was conducted using the structural equation modeling method. The findings indicated that the research model exhibited a good fit. Results revealed that alexithymia has a significant positive relationship with academic burnout and smartphone overuse (p<0.05). Furthermore, overuse demonstrated a direct and significant relationship with withdrawal symptoms, and withdrawal symptoms exhibited a significant relationship with academic burnout (p<0.001). Moreover, the serial mediation pathway of smartphone overuse and withdrawal symptoms mediated the relationship between alexithymia and academic burnout (p<0.05). The results indicate that alexithymia, given the substantial role of smartphone overuse and withdrawal symptoms, may serve as an explanatory variable for academic burnout.
