This study aimed to determine the mediating role of cyberspace dependence in the relationship between the dark triad of personality and loneliness with identity crisis in adolescents. The present research was a descriptive-correlational study using structural equation modeling. The statistical population consisted of female adolescents aged 16 to 18 years (upper secondary school) in Ahvaz, Iran, during the 2025–2026 academic year. A sample of 270 participants was selected through multistage cluster sampling. The instruments used included the Identity Crisis Questionnaire (ICQ; Ahmadi, 2008), the Dirty Dozen Dark Triad Personality Scale (DTDDS; Jonason & Webster, 2010), the third version of the UCLA Loneliness Scale (UCLA-LS3; Russell, 1996), and the Internet Addiction Test (IAT; Young, 1998). Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results indicated a good model fit. Findings showed that the dark triad of personality, loneliness, and cyberspace dependence all had significant positive relationships with identity crisis (p < .01). Furthermore, the dark triad and loneliness indirectly predicted identity crisis in adolescents through cyberspace dependence (p<.001). The results of this study indicate that adolescents who experience higher levels of Dark Triad personality traits and loneliness are more likely to develop dependence on virtual space, and this dependence can increase the severity of their identity crisis. Therefore, identity crisis in adolescents appears to result from the interaction between maladaptive personality traits and emotional factors with behavioral patterns related to virtual space, and it cannot be attributed solely to intrapersonal factors.
